Police officer who murdered his wife jailed for 17 years

The many lives broken by the murder of Invercargill police wife Verity McLean found a voice at her killer's sentencing.

Her family and new partner Garry Duggan, with whom she lived for only three weeks before her death, spoke of ongoing anguish as former cop Ben McLean, 48, was jailed on Monday for a minimum of 17 years by Justice Rachel Dunningham in the High Court in Invercargill.

Verity, called Bert by her friends, left her police officer husband on April 5 after a marriage of 20 years to move in with Duggan, a potroom operator at the Tiwai Point Aluminium Smelter. They began an affair before Christmas.
